What your computer means by NDL (rec on-ramp)

No-stop limits, from first principles
Let's define the term before the acronym. Your no-decompression limit (NDL) is simply the longest you can stay at a given depth and still ascend slowly to the surface without being required to stop on the way up. Stay within it and the ascent is flexible. Go past it and your body needs scheduled pauses to release absorbed gas safely — that is decompression.
Where does the number come from? While you are down, your tissues soak up nitrogen from the air you breathe, and they do it faster the deeper you are, because the gas is under more pressure. Each tissue can only hold so much before ascending directly would risk bubbles forming. The NDL is the model's estimate of how long until you reach that ceiling. This is why it collapses with depth: you might have around an hour at 18 m but only a handful of minutes at 40 m, since the deeper water loads nitrogen so much faster.
Here is the part divers miss. Your computer is not reading a fixed table — it recalculates the limit continuously from your actual profile, second by second, accounting for every metre and minute you have spent. That is exactly why two divers who entered the water together can surface with completely different remaining times. One drifted shallow, the other hovered deep; their bodies carry different loads.
The practical takeaway: treat the NDL as a moving model, not a guarantee. Stay well inside it rather than diving to the wire, ascend slowly, and add a safety stop to buy margin. Decompression algorithms are educated estimates built on population averages — your hydration, exertion, temperature and physiology all nudge your real risk, and none of that shows on the display.
And if you intend to cross zero into mandatory stops, that is a different kind of dive entirely. Plan the decompression deliberately, on the surface, before you go — not by watching the number tick down and improvising.
