Why 5 m for 3 minutes (rec on-ramp)

The safety stop, demystified

First, the plain version. A safety stop is a short, deliberate pause near the end of a dive — most agencies teach roughly three minutes at about 5 m — before you finish your ascent. On a no-decompression dive you are technically allowed to swim straight to the surface, so the stop is, by definition, optional. Yet nearly every trained diver does it. Why?

To see the reasoning, picture the gas in your body. Underwater you breathe air under pressure, and your tissues quietly absorb extra nitrogen in proportion to depth and time. On the way up that nitrogen has to leave again, carried by your blood to your lungs and breathed out. Ascend gently and it stays dissolved and exits cleanly. Rush, and the pressure drops faster than your body can clear it, so some nitrogen comes out of solution as bubbles — the root cause of decompression sickness.

The safety stop helps in two ways. It gives your faster tissues a few extra minutes at shallow depth to off-gas before the final pressure change. Just as importantly, it interrupts the ascent — it stops you from rocketing through the last few metres, where the pressure change is steepest and bubbles are most likely to form and grow. In effect it forces a slow, controlled finish.

The practical takeaway: keep a slow ascent rate the whole way up (most agencies cap it near 9 m/min), then hang at about 5 m for three minutes. Use the time well — settle your buoyancy, hold your depth steady, slow your breathing, look around. Add time, or a deeper stop, after a deep or hard repetitive day, since more conservatism is wise when your nitrogen load is higher.

One honest caveat: if you exceed your no-stop limit, these pauses stop being a courtesy. They become mandatory decompression, and skipping them carries real risk. Know which kind of stop you are doing before you splash, not after.
