Why we add helium to the mix
Start with the problem, not the gas. As you go deeper, two things quietly get worse, and both come from breathing gas under pressure. The first is narcosis — a kind of underwater drunkenness. Nitrogen under pressure has a sedating effect on the nervous system, so judgment, reaction time and fine motor skill all degrade, often without the diver noticing. The second is gas density. The deeper you are, the more tightly packed each breath becomes, so the gas is literally thicker and harder to move in and out of your lungs. That makes you work harder just to breathe, and high work of breathing is a recognised driver of CO₂ buildup and panic.
Helium addresses both at once. It is far less narcotic than nitrogen, so swapping some nitrogen for helium keeps your head clearer at depth — measured as a lower "equivalent narcotic depth," or END. And helium is a much lighter molecule, so the same breath is less dense and easier to move, lowering your work of breathing. One additive, two problems solved.
There is a third gas to respect: oxygen. As you descend its pressure climbs too, and past safe limits it turns toxic — so the oxygen fraction is dialled down for deeper targets, while staying high enough to never go hypoxic. That is why trimix is a three-gas blend, oxygen plus helium plus nitrogen, not simply air with helium added.
Nothing is free. Helium enters and leaves your tissues differently from nitrogen, which changes — and can lengthen — your decompression schedule. It also conducts heat away from you faster, so you cool quicker on long dives, and it is genuinely expensive in the volumes technical dives consume. Mix design becomes a balancing act between clear thinking, breathability, deco time and cost.
The practical takeaway: past roughly 40 m, "just breathe air" stops being a serious plan, because narcosis, density and oxygen exposure are all climbing toward dangerous territory. Trimix, blended for the target depth, keeps you lucid and able to breathe where it matters most. It is not bravado; it is the conservative choice, and it demands proper training to plan and execute.
Dial in the blend for the actual depth, and respect the longer, colder deco it buys you.
