CCR: living and dying by the setpoint
To understand the setpoint, first understand what a closed-circuit rebreather (CCR) does. Instead of dumping every exhaled breath into the water like open-circuit scuba, a rebreather recycles your gas: it scrubs out the carbon dioxide you produce and adds back the oxygen you consume, so the same loop of gas circulates again and again. That is why rebreathers are quiet and efficient.
The "setpoint" is the target it works to. The unit aims to hold the partial pressure of oxygen in the loop — your ppO₂ — at a fixed value, say 1.3 bar, by injecting small shots of pure oxygen as your body burns it off. This is the genuine magic of a CCR: because it controls ppO₂ directly rather than a fixed gas percentage, it can deliver close to the optimal breathing gas at every depth, maximising bottom time and minimising decompression.
It is also where the danger lives. The same loop that gives you ideal gas will happily give you lethal gas if the ppO₂ drifts. If oxygen injection fails or the setpoint runs low, ppO₂ falls and you slide toward hypoxia — and hypoxia is notorious for arriving with no warning at all; divers simply lose consciousness. If the controller adds too much, ppO₂ climbs toward hyperoxia and the convulsion risk that comes with it. On open circuit your gas is whatever is in the tank; on a rebreather, what you are breathing is the product of sensors and valves working correctly.
This is why CCR culture is built around the oxygen sensors. Divers calibrate cells carefully, run redundant displays, distrust a cell that disagrees with its neighbours, and drill the habit of constantly checking the loop's ppO₂. The loop is wonderful right up until the moment it lies to you, and the lie is invisible unless you are watching the numbers.
The practical takeaway: train the platform properly, monitor ppO₂ relentlessly, trust calibrated instruments over assumptions — and always plan the open-circuit bailout that gets you home if the loop quits.
