Gas density: the limit nobody taught you
Here's a limit that kills divers who never knew it existed, and it has nothing to do with oxygen or nitrogen narcosis. It's about how heavy your breathing gas becomes at depth.
Gas compresses as pressure rises, so the deeper you go, the denser, thicker, and harder to move your breathing gas becomes. Think of trying to breathe through a straw versus breathing freely. Dense gas resists flowing in and out of your lungs, and the energy you spend just moving it is your work of breathing. At some point the gas is so thick you physically cannot ventilate fast enough to flush out the carbon dioxide your body produces.
That retained CO₂ is the real danger. Rising CO₂ drives a frantic, panicky air hunger, sharply worsens nitrogen narcosis, and increases your susceptibility to oxygen toxicity. It can spiral fast, and crucially, the impairment hits the very judgement you'd need to recognise and fix it.
Research by Anthony and Mitchell put numbers on this. Their guidance recommends keeping breathing-gas density at or below 5.2 g/L, with a hard ceiling around 6.2 g/L. Beyond those values, your ability to clear CO₂ falls off a cliff for most divers.
Where do those limits bite? Air reaches 5.2 g/L at roughly 31 m, and by about 39 m you've hit the 6.2 g/L cap. In other words, deep air dives quietly push you into dangerous density territory long before most divers realise it. This is one of the strongest and least-discussed arguments for trimix: helium is a very light gas, so swapping some nitrogen for helium drops your gas density quickly, often bringing it back under the threshold even at depths where narcosis alone might have seemed survivable.
Practical takeaway: when you plan a deep dive, calculate your gas density at maximum depth, not just MOD and END. If the plan pushes density past 5.2 g/L, add helium until it's back in range. Density is a hard physical wall, not a matter of toughness.
